What You’ll Learn in Term 3 – Adult Drawing (Wangaratta Art School)

In this 8-week foundational program, students will be introduced to classical drawing techniques that professional artists have used for centuries — simplified and adapted for complete beginners. You’ll be gently guided to build confidence, accuracy, and a deeper understanding of form and light, even if you’ve never studied art before.

Here’s a preview of the techniques we’ll explore together:

🔳 Negative Space Drawing

Learn to shift your perspective by drawing the space around your subject rather than the subject itself. This method trains your brain to see shapes more accurately and unlocks a new way of “seeing like an artist.”

📐 Gridding for Accuracy

Discover how artists use grid overlays to break down complex images into manageable parts. You’ll use this method to create accurate drawings from reference photos — a powerful tool for portraits, still life, and more.

🌓 Notan Studies

Based on Japanese art principles, Notan is the balance of light and dark in a composition. You'll create simplified black-and-white studies that train your eye to see contrast, shape, and visual balance — an essential step before tackling tone and detail.

✒️ The Loomis Method

Learn the fundamentals of drawing the human head using the Loomis framework — a classical approach that simplifies facial structure into shapes and planes. This builds a solid foundation for portraits without overwhelm.

📏 The Golden Ratio & Composition

You’ll discover the secrets behind visually pleasing artwork by learning about the Golden Ratio — a timeless compositional principle used by Da Vinci and modern designers alike. We’ll apply it to sketch layout and subject placement.

🌑 Cast Shadow Mapping

Go beyond basic shading. You’ll learn how light falls across objects, how shadows behave, and how to map them with accuracy — essential for creating realistic depth and form.

Envelope Method

Before diving into detail, you’ll learn to “envelope” your subject in a basic shape — helping you build better proportions, angles, and placement from the very start.

🌗 Chiaroscuro

This dramatic technique is all about contrast. We’ll explore how to create form using bold light and shadow — the same method used by the Old Masters to add mood and volume to their work.

By the end of the term, you'll have developed a toolkit of classical skills you can apply to portraits, still life, landscapes, and beyond — all at your own pace, in a supportive, encouraging environment.
